I'm using cURL for a SOAP interface to a MLS web service for listing data and photos.

I have shown how you can use cURL as a way to initiate sbhttpd tasks from a scriba script.

I would look at your Apache config host IP.

Amazon EC2 is a good (cheap) way to have a dedicated server to play with. (.02 / hour - micro instance)

I did all my SB 64 bit development on a Amazon instance of Ubuntu before getting a 64 bit box of my own.
